Petty theft occurs when a defendant is alleged to have taken the personal property or services (valued at less than $400.00) of another with the intent to permanently deprive that person of his/her property.

Grand theft on the other hand results when a defendant is alleged to have taken the personal property or services (valued at more than $400.00) of another with the intent to permanently deprive that person of his/her property.
